A Current Transformer (CT), often referred to simply as a current transformer, is an electrical device designed to produce a current in its secondary winding that is proportional to the current flowing in its primary winding. Here’s how it works:
The primary winding of a Current Transformer consists of a single turn (or sometimes a few turns) of the conductor carrying the current to be measured. This primary winding is usually the live conductor itself, passing through the core of the transformer. The secondary winding, consisting of a large number of turns wound around the core, is connected to the measurement or protection equipment.
When current flows through the primary winding, it creates a magnetic field in the core of the transformer. This magnetic field induces an electromotive force (EMF) in the secondary winding, causing a current to flow in it. Due to the principle of electromagnetic induction and the turns ratio between the primary and secondary windings, the current in the secondary winding is proportional to the current in the primary winding, but at a lower value determined by the turns ratio.
Importantly, for accurate measurement, the secondary winding of a Current Transformer should not be open-circuited. If the secondary is open, the induced EMF in the secondary winding will rise sharply, potentially damaging the transformer or the connected equipment due to excessive voltage. Therefore, the secondary winding is usually short-circuited when not in use or connected to a low-impedance load such as a meter or relay.
In summary, a Current Transformer operates on the principles of electromagnetic induction and the transformer action, allowing for the accurate measurement or monitoring of currents in electrical systems without the need to directly tap into the high-current primary circuit.
